About the Texas Folklife Festival

Don’t have plans for the weekend?  Go downtown to the Institute of Texan Cultures for the Texas Folklife Festival.  Already have plans you say?  Cancel them right now because you won’t have another opportunity like this until next year.

But Jerry, I don’t even know what the Texas Folklife Festival is.  Do I need to wear my Sunday best?

Picture this.  You’re walking down a path and you hear music, lots of music.  Flutes, symbols, beating drums.  You see a Chinese lion dancing up ahead.  To your left, Italian gelato and to your right, an ice cold beer in a German stein.  Behind you, a tall Argentinean couple dancing the tango.  Turn the corner and all of a sudden you’re in paradise, Hawaiian skirts and coconut drinks.  Keep walking and out of nowhere you hear someone yelling,

Tacos de pastor!

You realize you just set foot in a Latin American Market.

There’s Capoeira dancers with machetes on one side and a Mariachi band on the other.

The Texas Folklife Festival is something like this and so much more.  The moment you set foot at the Institute of Texan Cultures you will be submersed by more than 40 different cultures, 250 different organizations, 150 different menu items, 60 arts & crafts vendors and several stages of music, dance and entertainment.

Learn about another culture and savor the variety of food and drinks available at the festival.  What other opportunity will you have to travel the world without leaving Texas?

It’s a fun event for all ages that only happens once a year.  Remember to take pictures and let me know how you like it.  I will be tweeting using the hash-tag: #TxFolklife and providing up to date statuses on Facebook.  I might even broadcast a live video clip or two.  If you see me there stop and say hi!  Also, check back here after the festival for interviews, pictures and videos.
