I’m alive. I’m ALIVE! Saturday, October 12th, I woke up at five in the morning to force myself to eat something before an eighteen mile run. I hardly ever eat breakfast and much less if it is before nine. I sliced a bagel in half and spread some peanut butter on one of the halves and saved the rest for later. I headed out the door half asleep and with a mouth full of peanut butter.
My morning started off in the mid 50’s. I can honestly say this felt so much better than my usual runs in 90 degree weather but I was still nervous. I didn’t know how my stomach was going to react to the morning snack or if my legs were going to give out because of the cold weather.
To my surprise, that half a bagel with peanut butter carried me for fourteen miles! The weather also made it easier for me to breathe. I was able to maintain an eleven minute pace and I felt great at the end of the race. This was probably one of my best runs since starting training. Who knew properly fueling before a run actually made a difference!
The question I have now is, if half a bagel carries me fourteen miles, does a complete bagel carry me twice as far? Stay tuned! My next long run is coming up October 26th.
